Travel to Koh Samui, Thailand

Koh Samui
is Thailand 's third largest island and is located on the east coast in the middle of the southern gulf area and is part of the archipelago containing Koh Tao and Koh Pha-Ngan.

The first settlers here were from Hainan, an island which is now part of China . These settlers became coconut farmers and Koh Samui's many palm trees still give a large crop of coconuts. However the inhabitants of the island now make far more money from tourism than they could ever hope to make from coconut farming. The population of the island refer to themselves as chao samui rather than Thais and have a different culture and cuisine from the other islands.

Koh Samui started becoming popular with Western travelers from the 1980s onwards and is now quite crowded in high season (December to February and July to August). Koh Samui may be affected by the rain from July to October but the weather will still be mainly fine. There can be heavy winds from October to January.

It can be hard to get accommodation at these times. Koh Samui still has a travelers air about it and it is more laid-back than other developed tourist resorts in Thailand . Koh Samui has many beaches, some are more developed than others and it is still possible to find quieter parts of the island. With the influx of visitors, environmental issues are becoming a concern. Buildings are restricted in height to being no taller than the palm trees and policies are being formulated to deal with the increased amount of noise and rubbish on the island. If you are bored of the beaches, there are plenty of other things to do. There are several temples worth visiting on the islands.

Koh Samui has an airport. There are ferries from Surat Thani or the nearby islands of Kao Tao and Koh Pha-Ngan. Package deals are available to travel to Samui from Bangkok by train, bus and boat. These can be booked through travel agents . Travel around the island is by songthaews which are pickups with two benches which follow set routes, picking up and dropping off passengers on the way, or there are a few air-con taxis. It is possible to hire motorcycles but the roads aren't great and accidents are frequent.

Samui Beaches

Chaweng Beach / Chaweng Noi
Chaweng beach is the biggest one with very smooth sand and clear water. With discotheques, bars and shops, it is the main tourist center. There are many hotels and resorts located at Chaweng beach. The area is too large for walking. You need a taxi from the north end to the south. Chaweng Noi is the southern part of Chaweng.

Lamai Beach / Hinta Hinyai
Lamai beach is the second big tourist center. The beach is a little bit more rough and the water is deeper. It's an excellent location for swimming and has a well-known nightlife. Lamai can be discovered by walking, as the area is not as large as Chaweng. Hinta Hinyai is a famous rock formation at the southern end of Lamai Beach..

Big Buddha Beach / Bang Po Beach / Bophut Beach / Maenam Beach
located in the north of Samui has smooth sand and good swimming preferences. These areas are more quiet than the big tourist centers Chaweng and Lamai.

Choengmon Beach / Hua Thanon / Coral Cove / West coast / Thong Tanote
Chengmon beach in the north east, Coral Cove between Chaweng and Lamai, Hua Thanon in the south east and the West coast of the island are beautiful locations set amongst coconut plantations. These areas are quieter than the big tourist centers Chaweng and Lamai.

At the Thailand's southeast coast in the warm waters of the Gulf of Thailand is the Angthong group of islands.

The largest and most popular beaches are Chaweng and Lamai with their many resort, restaurants, and bars. For those wishing to find quieter places, there are more than a dozen other beaches to find.

December is the beginning of the high season on the island. The temperatures average 25 degree and although the humidity is high in this region. But the heat is not so unpleasant, because of the gentle sea breezes of the gulf.

The garden has a great display of caterpillars, set in the hillside and with a spectacular view of the sea, the Butterfly Garden is located on the south-east part of the island at Laem Sea Beach, next to Central Samui Village, off the 4170 road. The Big Buddha Beach

The beach it is so named, because you can see the Big Buddha temple from the whole length of one of the island’s longest beaches, from Bophut to Samui Airport.

While this quiet beach is a ways off the main road there are a couple of good reasons to make the trip.

On Sundays the Secret Garden has live music, which attracts of the resident foreigners who catch up on local news. You can easily spot it on a Sunday since its drive is packed with motor scooters. Big Buddha is also home to an excellent Indian and Middle Eastern restaurant called Shabash, which may be the only place you can get hummus and falafel on the island.

The Lamai Beach
Lamai is Samui’s second largest beach, but some say its most beautiful. The water offers excellent swimming and the beach is studded with graceful granite boulders, which are often enjoyed as fishing perches by local fisherman. Nightlife in Lamai is a bit more laid back than in Chaweng, although there are a couple of areas with beer bars and the Bauhaus pub has a good dance floor. There are several good restaurants in Lamai town.

Overlap Stone
On the north side of the 4163 ring-road, this rock holds a precarious perch over a daunting cliff top high over Lamai. One kilometer west of Hin – Ta & Hin – Yai.  These two stones, called Grandmother and Grandfather respectively, have been naturally crafted by the elements to resemble male and female genitalia.

It is a favorite tourist destination and visitors young and old can be seen admiring these natural wonders. The road leading to the sights is lined with some nice gift shops. Not to be missed. Follow the 4169 ring road southwest of Lamai, and watch for the signs.

The Chaweng beach
Chaweng is the longest beach and biggest town on Samui. There are a lot of hotels and bungalows along Chaweng’s fine white sand beach. You can find anything from five star luxury to a few budget bungalows remaining from Samui’s days as a backpacker’s heaven.

Close to the beach is the main road lined with restaurants offering every imaginable cuisine (you can even find Sushi and Mexican food here), numerous dive shops, and a few excellent open air discos where you can revel into the wee hours. If you wander further inland from the beach toward Chaweng lake you can stumble upon the local Thai boxing ring, a giant open air produce market and numerous food stalls catering to locals. Chaweng’s main road is one of the best places for people watching at night.

Na Muang Waterfall

Na Muang 1 Waterfall Between Hua Thanon and Na thon in the Southwest sector of the island, this waterfall is just off a concrete road, making iteasily accessible to visitors.

Rocks and tree roots form a natural staircase leading directly to a large pool at the base of the waterfall. Be careful when diving or swimming in the pool, however, as shallow, sharp rocks are hidden by the frothing of the fall.

Na Muang 2 Waterfall

Take the concrete road to the left, south of Na Muang 1 on the 4169 and follow it until it becomes a track. Continue to the end. A lovely 10 minute walk up a rocky path will bring you to the base of the most beautiful waterfall on the island.

Traveling to and around Koh Samui, Thailand

You have many different travel-options to see the beauty of Koh Samui. You can take the pick-up trucks, called Songtows (small open local buses).

Each destinations of these’s buses are clearly marked in English on the front and sides of the vehicle. There are no official stops around the island. Just give the driver a sign and tell here you like to go. The normal destination would cost not more than 40 Baht. It’s best to agree on a price before you get in. The buses are running at night too, but the fares-prices are much higher than in the day.

To rent your own car is a good way of getting around
since it will allow you to explore the many small roads and tracks that lead off into the interior jungles. The prices are between 800-2000 Baht. It is common that you must leave your passport as a collateral at the office where you like to rent a car. So don’t forget to change money before you go on a trip. If you do not purchase insurance you will be held responsible for any damage to the car.

Also dozens of yellow-colored Taxis you will find on Koh Samui.
Ask the driver to use the meter, or agree on a price before you get in. Quality bikes to rent around the island are available. Mountain bikes are the best way to cross the island. Keep in mind to take a lot of water and mosquito repellant with you. But the most visitors on Samui rent motorbikes. They are relatively inexpensive (around 120-250 baht/day). But take care The most frequent injuries visitors sustain come from burning their right calves on very hot exhaust pipes, or from losing control of the bike around corners or on loose sand.

Koh Samui has the highest rate of driving fatalities in Thailand. Needless to say drinking and driving should never be mixed, especially on a motorbike. Large off road worthy motorbikes can also be rented around the island. Prices are in the range of 500 baht per day.

Motorcyclists are required to use crash helmets. We recommend using them at all times. The penalty for non use of seat belts or helmets is several hours of lost time while waiting to pay a 500 baht fine. Samui police often enforce the helmet law in Na-Thon. An International Driving Permit, or a license from your home country, is required for all car and big bike rentals. Remember to drive on the left.
